I find it amusing that, as a mother, I spend so much time manufacturing family moments. When I experienced these moments as a child, or even when I saw it on television and movies, I thought it was a natural process. Moments that were happily spontaneous and untouchable. Turns out they are touched all over by the Momma in the house. I am the architect of our memories.
We took a drive to the beach today. We have been looking for tiny pockets in everyday life to fill with joy. Joy is something that is sorely lacking in the busy routines we lead. Pick up up, drop off, nap, cook, feed, clean, bath, bed, wash, dry, fold. It is a constant cycle that is easy to get stuck in. We broke that cycle today with a random trip to the beach on a rather cold and rainy day. Just to say we did. Just to have a “spontaneous” family moment.
The girls ran in the sand, splashed in the water, and searched for tiny shells. It was heavenly to hear their squeals and laughter for the short time we walked on the beach. It gave me excitement for the spring and summer season ahead of us.
If you are looking for me, I will be here planning our next accidental outing.
